Basically Bhangra dance is performed at the time the wheat crop is harvested. Therefore, when the wheat ripens and is on the verge of harvesting, the farmer goes ecstatic in happiness. If the weather does not cooperate during any stage of the crop, the yield can be drastically reduced. It needs extreme winter for several months, periodic waterings and hot weather at the time of ripening. Wheat also needs a lot of hard work from plantation to ripening. Wheat is the staple food in the Punjab and the other northern provinces of the Indo-Gangetic plains. ![]() But once it is ripened, the surplus can easily be sold in the market and money can be made. In Northern India and Pakistan it takes six months to ripen. What could be a happier occasion for a peasant, who’s hard toil of six wintry months is going to be rewarded?
